Rare 15th century Late Medieval Cotswold Stone Holy Water Stoup
£ 1,375.00 GBP
An exceptional and highly rare piece of early English ecclesiastical architectural salvage. Carved from Cotswold Oolitic limestone, this magnificent holy water stoup (aquaemanarium) dates to the Late Medieval period, circa 15th Century. The stoup features a 12" square basin with a deep hand tooled central bowl, resting on a substantial, integrated stone pillar base. Standing 31" high over all, this chunky architectural profile is a classic per-Reformation Gothic template, predating the delicate octagonal styles of the Tudor and Stuart eras.
Acquired from a private collection with regional provenance tracing back to architectural clearances in the historic village of Tormarton - famously home to a major 14th century Chantry and college of priests - this piece carries an incredible local backstory.
The stone boasts in irreplaceable, completely undisturbed natural patina. Centuries of outdoor exposure have developed a rugged, weathered grey-green crust adorned with beautiful yellow crustose lichens. this is a true collector's piece, perfectly scaled to serve as a stunning, historic water feature, green birdbath, or indoor sculpture statement.
